Description

Delicious homemade buns perfect for any filling.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 4 cups all-purpose flour (plus more for dusting)
  • 1 tablespoon sugar
  • 2 teaspoons instant yeast
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup warm water (110°F/43°C)
  • 1/4 cup unsalted butter (or a Halal-friendly alternative, melted)
  • 1 egg (optional, for egg wash)
  • Sesame seeds (optional for topping)

Instructions

  1. In a large mixing bowl, combine the warm water and sugar. Sprinkle the yeast over the water. Let it sit for about 5-10 minutes until it becomes frothy.
  2. Add the melted butter and salt into the yeast mixture. Gradually mix in the flour, starting with 3 cups, and stirring until it forms a rough dough.
  3. On a floured surface, knead the dough for about 8-10 minutes until it becomes smooth and elastic. If it’s sticky, add more flour, a tablespoon at a time.
  4. Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover it with a damp cloth or plastic wrap, and let it rise in a warm place for 1-2 hours, or until it doubles in size.
  5. After the dough has risen, punch it down and turn it onto a floured surface. Divide the dough into 8-10 equal pieces and shape them into balls.
  6. Place the shaped dough balls onto a baking tray lined with parchment paper. Cover them again and let them rise for another 30-45 minutes.
  7. Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).
  8. If using an egg wash, brush the tops of the buns with the beaten egg. Sprinkle sesame seeds if desired. Bake for 15-20 minutes or until the tops are golden brown.
  9. Remove the buns from the oven and let them cool on a wire rack. Once cool, slice them in half and get ready to load them with your favorite fillings!

Notes

  • Ensure the water is warm but not too hot to avoid killing the yeast.
  • Feel free to experiment with different toppings such as poppy seeds or herbs.
