Ingredients

- 4 cups all-purpose flour (plus more for dusting)
- 1 tablespoon sugar
- 2 teaspoons instant yeast
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1 cup warm water (110°F/43°C)
- 1/4 cup unsalted butter (or a Halal-friendly alternative, melted)
- 1 egg (optional, for egg wash)
- Sesame seeds (optional for topping)
Instructions
- In a large mixing bowl, combine the warm water and sugar. Sprinkle the yeast over the water. Let it sit for about 5-10 minutes until it becomes frothy.
- Add the melted butter and salt into the yeast mixture. Gradually mix in the flour, starting with 3 cups, and stirring until it forms a rough dough.
- On a floured surface, knead the dough for about 8-10 minutes until it becomes smooth and elastic. If it’s sticky, add more flour, a tablespoon at a time.
- Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover it with a damp cloth or plastic wrap, and let it rise in a warm place for 1-2 hours, or until it doubles in size.
- After the dough has risen, punch it down and turn it onto a floured surface. Divide the dough into 8-10 equal pieces and shape them into balls.
- Place the shaped dough balls onto a baking tray lined with parchment paper. Cover them again and let them rise for another 30-45 minutes.
- Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).
- If using an egg wash, brush the tops of the buns with the beaten egg. Sprinkle sesame seeds if desired. Bake for 15-20 minutes or until the tops are golden brown.
- Remove the buns from the oven and let them cool on a wire rack. Once cool, slice them in half and get ready to load them with your favorite fillings!

- Ensure the water is warm but not too hot to avoid killing the yeast.
- Feel free to experiment with different toppings such as poppy seeds or herbs.
